Teak-101

Teak (Tectona Grandis) is a decidious hardwood tree indigenous to the dry, hilly terrains of Indonesia and Southeast Asia. it is one of the hardest, strongest, and most durable of all timbers. Why is teakwood always the first choice for outdoor use? Because teakwood has naturally high oil and rubber content, a natural water repellent and preservative, which makes it both stable and highly resistant to rot, warping, shrinkage, and swelling. In addition, teak has the greatest capability compared with other woods to withstand the effects of the outdoor environment. It can naturally endure the effects of sun, rain, and even snow without rotting, warping, or cracking. Left alone, teak will naturally age to a beautiful silvery-gra patina color within a year (depending on the surrounding climate). However, teak can also be treated witha high quality teak cleaner and protector to preserve its original color.

A major misconception is that teak comes from tropical rain forest; the fact is that teak cannot grow in the rain forest. During the past decades, strong efforts have insured the careful control of sustain-yield sources of teak coming from Southeast Asia.

Our teak is grown on the island of Java. Initially there are between 1000 to 1600 teak stems per hectare. The farmers carefully grow the trees in distinctive patterns, each field displaying trees in various stages of growth. Once the mature trees are harvested, the field are re-seeded to maintain a healthy reforestation. The government controls and regulates all wood cutting.
